Hello everyone,

I have a legacy Alienware m17x (Pre-Dell version) that a fresh copy of Vista 64 bit has been installed on. However I'm having a problem getting the keyboard lights to work. This is due to not having the 64bit version of Command Center designed for this laptop. I have tried the newer versions of Command Center on Dell's website, but those don't work. Alright! So I just got my VERY first Alienware system.. it's an M17-R1 from 2009! I got a killer deal on it as it has some cosmetic damage, but after reading the restoration thread posted on here awhile back, I have began scouring the net for replacement parts. Anyway, below are the specs for this system. My question is, which operating system will be optimal for my system? Windows Vista or Windows 7? Currently it's running a fresh install of it's original Windows Vista Home 64bit package....

Good afternoon,

I recently had the video card in this machine replaced with a Quadro FX 2700M. The Nvidia site recognizes it as such when I do a scan for drivers. I can't get it to accept any drivers. In device manager it is just listed as Standard VGA Graphics Adapter, and isn't really functional. I'm hoping someone here might know how I can fix this.

Issue at hand. 2 attempts at reformatting for windows 7 64 bit, applying the drivers in what is portrayed to be the correct order, and downloading an older version of command center. I cannot get the keyboard lights to light up at all! There is no option! anywhere!

i'm having many issues for getting drivers to work on my m17x. i'm trying to get drivers for windows 7 64-bit. i've downloaded an image of the resource cd for the m15x/m17x, but half of the drivers don't work right or don't work at all. like the Command Center keeps thinking i have an older area 51 desktop, and only half the keyboard lights up, and the light around the trackpad is just off. i cannot get synaptics touchpad drivers of any sort to install at all, which is a complete pain, as i...

I would appreciate suggestions on what to leave on the computer (i.e. Win 7, any other programs), but more importantly what to remove. I want to be sure there is no trace of me, or my identity left on it when it leaves my hands.

What do you all do if and when you sell?

Hi, my son has a Alienware X51 r1, but with the newer power board. everything was ok until today, yesterday i upgraded to Windows 10 and most things were ok, except the odd game not working. Today i started to re-install his games and the next thing it said there was a hard-drive issue?

I unplugged and plugged the hard drive back in and now the X51 wont boot up.???

the power turns on and the fan's start, but after that NOTHING. no boot screen, nothing.

i've tried unplugging everything...

I know a lot of people have had a problem with this. The ribbon wears out or develops tiny broken connections making it unusable. The laptop is unable to turn on or display the LEDs above the keyboard. Finding a replacement is next to impossible, but I finally found one that works great! It is sold by Mouser Electronics...

I am running Windows 7 Home Premium on this old laptop.
I purchased a Sony bluetooth headset and have used it on my wife's Samsung tablet and her Acer Chromebook. Headphones pair with both items and sound great.

So I get a LOT of PM's from you guys asking if I have any mxm cards for sale. Since I am on ebay a lot I figured I would start a thread where if I or anyone else find a hard to find card that may be compatible with our laptops I would post it in one spot to give everyone else a heads up. Here's my setup and what I used to get Windows 7 Professional 64 bit running well on my m15x. LAST UPDATED: 9/30/11

My Setup:
-Windows 7 Professional 64 bit OS

I want to add 16 GB of RAM to my machine. Right now I already have 16 GB Dual Channel DDR4 at 2133MHz but do not know if it is 2X8 or 4X4. Question I have is how do I tell what to get & what is on there now? And does it matter which manufacturer I get it from? (Kingston etc) Thanks

I inherited this laptop from some friends several months ago (God bless their little alien hearts). They pretty much wiped it clean before giving it to me, and I installed Win 7 Pro SP1 and MS Office 2010. Does anyone have suggestions that will help this lovely alien work a little (or a lot) faster?
